Tanks were used because of that problem, but with the invention of the tank the machine guns can not shoot threw the tanks strong protection. The u-boat was used by the Germans and they shot down enemy ships from under water and it was hard for other countries to locate them. Mustard gas was created and it was a very hard and painful way to die. It caused blisters to form on the lungs if breathed in, that is why they had to ware gas masks whenever the enemy threw it. It also burned the skin if your skin was exposed to it. It was so harsh and painful that after World War 1 they banned it from being used in any other wars. Finally the creation if airplanes made it possible to drop bombs from above, it also made it possible to see the enemy from above to see their trench and what they are doing.
